As I was researching a replacement door opener I decided I wanted a DC motor. They were more money though. Then I found this unit. It clearly stated DC motor in the description at the time. I placed it in my Amazon shopping cart but didn't actually place the order till the next day. After I had placed the order I immediately noticed the title of the product had changed from DC to AC! Quote from title: "1/2-Horsepower AC" Furthermore, in the product description it clearly states: "Quiet 24-Volt DC Motor". So which is it? Why did the title change over night?
When the box arrived I immediately read every word on the packaging and all paperwork. NOWHERE doe it state this is a DC motor unit. However it also does not state AC either. Neither does it state a rating either in Horsepower or Newtons which is how a DC motor is rated.
The head is really small. I was expecting it to be at least the same physical size as a typical 1/2 HP AC garage door opener but it is really tiny. You would think that a power supply would need to be included to convert AC (which your house power is) to DC if this were a DC unit. And I would think this power supply would make it bigger.
It does start off slow then speed up then slow down near the end again. However the max speed it reaches is still quite slow.
The range of the remote is poor. With my old opener I was able to start the door opening as I was several houses away so it would be open by the time I got there. This unit could not detect my button pushing till I was in the driveway. Combine this with the slow opening speed and you can see my frustration. I did do some adjusting to the wire antenna and it works at a slightly further distance, but still not much.
The wired open button is just a dinky little doorbell button. There is no light to it or anything. Just a small little plastic button.
It was easy to adjust as described. It is quiet for a chain drive, but that just make it seem wimpy. It's small head size and quiet noise gives you a sense that it lacks power. -- Is this AC or DC motor?
My neighbor & I have a sore shoulder from over work, but will review this item in about July. Please return for an honest review. -- Garage Door Opener soon to be installed, please wait
I bought one of these Genie openers to replace one sold by a national chain as their own brand. It was one with a rubber belt drive that had served well for many years, but finally gave out. I was somewhat skeptical of the Genie brand as an earlier screw drive opener of theirs had problems in cold weather, but probably because of my application of the wrong lubricant. This one arrived from Amazon and in a couple of hours I had it up and running, and I love it. It's very quiet. I was expecting a chain drive to be noisier than the earlier belt, but it's quieter. It was very easy to adjust and the remote is a snap to set up. I intend to order a second one for the door that hasn't had an opener (except me) for many years. -- Great garage door opener!
Gave this opener to my son for Christmas and he seems happy with it. I am just Happy it arrived before Christmas Day. -- Happy
