I bought this a few years ago for a deck gate and installed it just fine. When I no longer needed the gate on the house deck I removed it and used it to replace a 100% hand made gate on a small pool deck. Worked just fine and has been in place for two years. Screws are cheap, but I used deck screws without a problem. Am buying a second kit to build another gate to replace one on a split rail fence. -- No problem
This is a great kit for putting a gate together. I was a little skeptical at first from some of the reviews I had read but ordered it anyway. For those that have complained about cheap construction and the kit not going together right here is the whole trick. You have to notch the 2x4's on the hinge side so that the hinges are recessed or level with the 2x4 edge, just like on a door jamb. If you don't do this I can see where some people would think dimensionally somethings not right and try and force the 2x4's in there. Don't do it, just take a few minutes with a chisel and hammer, mark where the hinges line up and chisel out for them. Work's like a charm and I highly recommend this kit, don't hesitate to buy it, good stuff. One other thing I did was go to Lowes and get another 4" hinge to match the 2 in the kit and installed it also in the middle of the gate for additional support. My gate turned out great. -- Great kit, one piece of advice
I used this kit last weekend to build an odd sized gate for a deck.....31" tall by 57" wide. This is an excellent concept for a quick and easy gate assembly without the need for complicated cross bracing or advanced carpentry skills. The problem with this kit though is the extremely poor quality control during the manufacturing process (made in China by the way). One of the four brackets was so far out of square that I had trouble joining my 2x4 members at one corner without some major elbow grease and the help of another person (and a rubber mallet) to force it into place. Also, the weld joints are so sloppy and they are built up so much that they interfere with the proper seating of the vertical 2x4 side rails. I had to notch my wood around the weld joints so it would seat properly in the brackets. This added a lot more time and trouble to the gate assembly.
Do not even think about using the hardware that comes with this kit. It looked a little too weak to me. I used my own 2.5" long #8 wood screws instead of the wood screws in the kit. The longer wood screws that I used should provide additional strength and holding power over the shorter screws that came with the kit. Also, I used 1/4x2 lag screws instead of the wimpy pan-head screws provided with the kit. I also used the lag screws to attach the hinges to the gate posts.
Overall, I am pleased with my gate now that it is finished but I'm only giving this Easy Gate kit two stars due to the poor quality of it's manufacturing and also because the provided hardware is practically useless. Both of these factors mean your gate is going to take much longer to assemble than it should and is going to cost you more money than you think by the time you buy all of the additional hardware. The finished gate looks good now, but I have heard from other users of this product that the hinges do not hold up well over time. The verdict is still out on that. Only time will tell I guess. -- Poor manufacturing quality
I made two 4x8' gates this morning, cutting all wood to the exact size needed, and when I went to hang them on the 4x4 posts (which I double-checked to make sure they were exactly vertical) they weren't square. Not sure how I'm going to fix it, but I am sure I won't be using these things again. -- Very disappointed
I bought 2 sets of these gate bracket kits. I built a fabulous gate with it (I am a 63 year old woman - I must admit I do more than most women in this field). I wish I could post a photo of the gate because you'd be amazed - it is VERY sturdy (I have a very active pit bull dog) and looks great. I am proud of the gate. Men are always amazed when they find out I built the gate myself. I did have to use the two sets because several of the brackets were not a true 90 degrees so I had to mix the sets to get 4 good corners. I'd buy them again and do it the same way if I were to need another gate. I am very happy with these brackets and the result I got using them. -- I could not have built a gate without this - built a great gate
