This is not a professional or even handyman tool. It is not of professional grade. Even when being extremely careful it dispenses too much paint which causes runs or uneven line. It is designed to be used one time which makes it to expensive for a one time use. This should be priced at $5.00 to make it any kind of value. I found that that the rollers did not roll freely which caused the tool to slide and deposit an uneven layer of paint. Because of this I had to repaint much of what I painted with this tool. I do not reccomend this tool at all. -- Ziba roller review
I was looking for a product that made it quicker and easier to edge around woodwork and ceilings and I figured I could trust This Old House. So I bought the Edge-n-Roll for painting the edges of walls. Based on my experience and looking back at the TOH "article", which named a whole series of Zibra products, I now get it. The "article" was obviously a paid "info-mercial" for Zibra. I should have figured it out when only Zibra products were mentioned.
Anyway, I should have realized that a roller would have problems. It either doesn't cover well or it leaves thick ridges of paint at each edge of the roller, or both. I needed to use a brush to smooth out the edges. And it left uneven edges, as if the roller walked side-to-side as it rolled. Also, despite some cleaver features, some surfaces of the device that should have remained clean became clogged with paint, causing messes.
Even more importantly, when I received the product, I found out that it wasn't recommended for the edge of a ceiling. That wasn't mentioned in the info-mercial article and it wasn't mentioned in the Amazon description. Plus it doesn't work for my baseboards because the guide edge is farther from the paint surface than the top edge of my baseboard. Perhaps some baseboards would be OK, but not mine.
Finally, I noticed that the packaging boasted that this product was designed by women, as if to suggest that that made it better (rather sexist, if you ask me). I don't think this is a product that women should brag about. I'm sure women can design perfectly good products, but this isn't one of them.
My recommendation is to buy a good brush and read up on how the pros paint. -- A total waste of money and time
I bought this at the hardware store with the orange sign because the one with the blue sign didn't carry it. I thought it was another cheap, unusable tool before I used it. I even felt guilty falling for their little trap (on the package it said it's designed for women). The promise of using no tape, once again, got me to buy this little gadget...even though I've purchased at least 10 different products for the same purpose, to no avail. I'm not pro-tape. My hand isn't steady enough to paint ceiling edges even with the best Purdy brushes.
The roller I bought at the depot was the same as it is here on Amazon, but it didn't have a nifty little tray thing, just a cheap throwaway paint tray which worked great.
I used this to paint the top of my walls, edging the ceilings. I was going from a bright teal to a muted mocha color, and it took 2 coats to cover it up.
The way this product works: there is a button on the top that you push in order to cause the sides of the paint roller to extend past the roller itself. You fit the roller into the loaded paint tray, making sure the edges hang over the sides while you load the paint roller. This process ensures no paint gets on the sides, thus marring your ceiling or corner with unwanted paint. Then you snap the sides back into place, and start roll'n. Note: there is a metal (as shown in the picture) and a plastic side (not shown) to the paint roller. The metal side works best for getting the paint closest to the edge you are painting.
A neat little trick is a lever underneath the paint rollers shaft. When pushed you can pivot the paint roller while using it, allowing for a further reach while standing on a fixed surface like a stool, chair, or pile of laundry.
The paint rollers themselves pick up just the right amount of paint, so none squirms out and underneath the edges like with all the other edging tools I have bought.
My only complaints are: the construction is cheap and rickety. It almost felt like it would fall apart in my hands at times, though it did not. Also, it is nearly impossible to clean these little rollers, and it is best to just buy new ones.
The tip is closed off, so you can't screw a paint pole in there. Darn.
But I give it five starts because:
This little tool saved me so much time and hassle, and ended the procrastination I was living in at the thought of having to tape all my ceilings. It deserves a long, detailed review and I will buy refills and use it again and again, because I love repainting (I guess). -- Not perfect, but I love it
I was surprised to see this item getting so many mediocre reviews. I've used this product for a year now in several rooms and have nothing but rave reviews for it. I will never ever go back to tape or pad edgers again! I've been known to leave rooms painted without the edging done because I hate edging so much, but this product makes quick work of it so all my painting projects are totally complete now. I'll admit I'm even so cheap that instead of tossing and buying refills I will wash everything and use it again and still haven't had any bad results. I absolutely love, love, love this product and can't say enough good things about it! -- Best edging product EVER!
I ordered this product despite the bad reviews because of the 'black stripes' the roller leaves behind.
When I received the product had started laughing. The roller has a side (with plastic spacers) which should face the trim and a side which is made of metal. The roller rotates 180degrees, so the trim-side can be left or right. Proper usage of it will solve the 'black stripe problem' immediately.
The one part I really don't like is that you can't order just a new set of rollers. We're all trying to be a bit "greener", it would be nice if the manufacturers would help us... -- ignore the 'black stripe' complains
